Researchers at the Institute, Ozaki Mazi and others, began investigating trace substances in 16 new wood pulp products and 12 recycled Paper Products since 2001. The researchers took samples of their size of 1 cm to detect the traces of substances precipitated in ethanol from each paper product.
As a result, 13 kinds of paper products containing new pulp as raw materials, such as napkins, kitchen papers, coffee filter papers, and tea packaging papers, were detected to be suspected of having environmental hormones such as bisphenol A (abbreviated as BPA) per gram of paper. The content of the product is 34-360 nanograms, of which the kitchen paper has the highest BPA content.
The researchers also detected BPA in 8 paper products made from recycled paper, such as sandwich and fried chicken boxes, and contained between 190 and 26,000 nanograms per gram of paper product, including sandwich packs. The highest BPA content is comparable to the BPA content of food containers made from polycarbonate in the past.
In addition, carcinogenic 4,4-bis (dimethylamino) benzophenone (abbreviated as MK) was detected in nine paper products made from recycled paper, and its content per gram of paper product was also detected. It is 1700 to 12,000 nanograms, of which the highest is the MK content in cartons for vegetable packaging. By microscopic examination, it was also found that recycled paper fibers contained residual particulate matter of ink and thermal paper.
Based on this, the researchers cautioned people to beware of the possible harm to the health of pollutants in these paper products, and called on the relevant government departments to establish strict hygiene and environmental protection standards for these paper products directly related to people's lives.
